HOW TO FIND A CROSSFIT GYM.
CrossFit boxes vary wildly in quality, coaching, and culture. The right gym makes CrossFit transformative. The wrong one leads to injury or quitting. Here's how to find one that fits you.
Search by location
Browse CrossFit gyms by city, or use the clubs page location filter. Look for both official CrossFit affiliates (pay licensing fees, follow CrossFit programming standards) and independent functional fitness gyms.
Check coaching credentials
Minimum: CrossFit Level 1 Certificate. Better: Level 2 or specialist certs (weightlifting, gymnastics, endurance). Ask how many coaches are on the floor during classes. Ratio should be no worse than 1:12.
Try before you commit
Most boxes offer a free trial class or intro session. Take it. Watch how coaches correct form, how they scale movements for different levels, and how members interact. Culture matters as much as programming.
Ask about programming
Good boxes follow periodised programming (not random daily WODs). Ask: do you have strength cycles? Is there a progression for beginners? How do you handle scaling? 'We just do the main site WOD' is a red flag.
Compare pricing
UK CrossFit memberships range from £80-£180/month. Unlimited classes should be included. Watch for hidden costs: joining fees, mandatory courses, extra charges for open gym. Some boxes offer off-peak memberships at 30-40% less.
Check equipment
Essentials: barbells, bumper plates, pull-up rigs, rowing machines, assault bikes. For Hyrox training: SkiErgs, sleds, wall ball stations. Browse gym equipment lists on club pages to compare before visiting.
